Check out our Instagram or Facebook page for more schedule and event details Big Mom’s menu ranges from universal comfort food (chicken stew, mac ‘n’ cheese, banana pudding) to non-mainstream dishes. Dhara deserves the praise of soul food icons. Like chitlin, oxtail and neon green key lime cake. An obscure storefront on the corner of a tidy Augusta mall, this is the friendly, cheap spot for the lunch you want. The menu also includes hamburgers and two types of chicken salad – fried or grilled.
Fat Man’s Mill Cafe
Stewed chicken is an indescribable delight, a portion of dark meat that gives thigh and thigh meat that is itself very moist, covered with skin that has been cooked in a virtual leaf, dark, Cooked in a well-made sauce. Oxtail requires work to separate the nuggets from the bones and (at least some) fat, but such effort with knife, fork and teeth rewards the eater with beef nuggets that are incredibly tender and delicious. Among the side dishes are firm, sour tomato discs encased in a crust of fried green tomatoes that transform into a firm, fatty richness that perfectly complements the nightshade fruit. Rutabaga, cut into tender bite-sized cubes, is good in a completely different way – as simple and straightforward as a root vegetable can be, just like peppers. Mac ‘n’ cheese does exactly what it’s supposed to: it provides creamy, milky relief from spicy food. Other side dishes available include collard greens (choose collards or turnips), black-eyed peas, braised okra, yams, roasted squash and weekend-only rice hash. A meatless plate with three or four vegetables is definitely an option.
There’s nothing overwhelming about Big Mom’s red velvet cake, with just a hint of cocoa, but it’s the perfect comfort dessert for this kind of meal: moist, fresh, tender, generously layered with cream cheese. Banana pudding is a style not uncommon in these parts – just meringue or whipped cream without the cream, bananas and cookies to brighten it up. It’s not a bad dessert, but it’s not as wonderful as Sour Banana Lightness could be.

Tiffany’s Eatery, 828 Broad St. in, the official opening will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6, restaurant operator and name Tiffany Sims. The company, which was founded in 2020, briefly teased its soul food offering on social media after a soft launch in mid-July.
Tiffany’s is not the first restaurant at that location. Older Augustans may remember the Orange Julius that opened in 1970 at 828 Broad. In 1999, 828 was occupied for several years by the operators of the popular Eat-A-Platey Drive-In on Peach Orchard Road. By 2002, Shaq opened there, then Raging Bull, Fish & More, and recently K’s Buffalo Wings.
V’s Barbershop draws inspiration from an era when checkerboard floors, wood paneling and leather-backed swivel chairs helped set the scene for men getting professional haircuts and shaves.
Franchisees Sam Minter and Joey Testino opened their first local V in 2019 at 616 Mullins Colony Drive in Evans, and the second in 2021 at 3505 Professional Circle, Suite C in Martinez.
