World Cup quarter-finals 2022: which teams have qualified?

(Reuters) – The knockout phase of the soccer World Cup is heading into the quarter-finals, which kick off on Friday in Qatar. Here are the teams that have so far qualified for the quarter-finals.

Argentina

Argentina overcame Australia in a frantic battle to win 2-1 and reach the quarter-finals, where they will face the Netherlands on Friday.

Captain Lionel Messi, who has said he intends to retire from the national team after the tournament, scored his first goal in a World Cup knockout round in his 1,000th match to beat Diego Maradona with eight World Cup goals.

La Silicion won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, and reached the final on three other occasions, most recently in 2014 when they lost to Germany.

Brazil

Brazil reached the quarter-finals with a crushing 4-1 victory over South Korea, scoring all of their goals in the first 36 minutes of the match. They will face Croatia in the first match of the quarter-finals on Friday at 1500 GMT.

Silicao won the World Cup five times and is the favorite before the tournament to win its sixth title, which is a record.

Brazil have played in every World Cup final since 1930 but have not reached the final since they last won the title in 2002.

Croatia

Goalkeeper Dominik Levakovic saved three penalties as Croatia beat Japan 3-1 on penalties after the 120-minute match ended 1-1.

The Croats will next meet Brazil on Friday.

This is the sixth edition of Croatia, which reached the final in 2018, losing to France.

England

England secured a place in the quarter-finals with a 3–0 win over African champions Senegal, in another emphatic victory after blowouts against Wales and Iran in the group stage.

The Three Lions are scheduled to meet defending champions France on Saturday.

England have only won the World Cup once, in 1966, and finished fourth in 2018.

France

Among the bookies’ favorites to win the tournament, France lived up to expectations, beating Poland 3-1 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Led by Olivier Giroud – who overtook Thierry Henry as the national team’s top scorer with 52 international goals – and current tournament target Kylian Mbappe, Les Blues will meet England’s Gareth Southgate on Saturday.

France won the World Cup in 1998 and 2018.

Holland

The Netherlands advanced to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over the United States on Saturday and will face Argentina’s Messi on Friday.

The Dutch – unbeaten in 19 matches after their exit from Euro 2020 – were runners-up in three World Cups in 1974, 1978 and 2010.

This year marks their return to the international arena after failing to qualify in 2018.
